The Truth Is In The Eyes

It was garbage night and my truck was in a direct line of fire. If I didn’t move it the pails would have sat stagnant for another week. And Lord knows mama would have given me an earful.

So I cranked up the old Chevy and out the speakers comes “Smiling Faces Sometimes by The Undisputed Truth.

Instead of placing the gear stick in drive. I sat still and took in the lyrics.

“Smiling faces sometimes
Pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces.”

Every word in this song resonated to the core. Over the last eleven years, I worked with too many folks who had smiling faces.

It was like a bad version of speed dating. No time for a relationship, get to the point. Give me the bottom line.

“Let me tell you
The truth is in the eyes ’cause the
eyes don’t lie.”

I was famous for misreading the eyes. Always searching for the heart and soul. Blindsided by the look.

“Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and
I got proof ( beware) beware of the handshake that hides the snake.”

Lopsided business to business relationships was no longer for us. So at the beginning of Covid, we opted out.

In the early days, we chased and we chased. Always feeling empty, never knowing, and never forming relationships.

You can’t help people that you don’t know.

“I am a-tellin’ you beware of
the pat on the back
It just might hold you back.”

Sometime this week. Take a second and review who you work for? Who do you buy from? And who you sell to? What’s your relationship like? Don’t get eleven years deep before you look into those smiling faces.

And remember the truth is in the eyes.
